While private transportation remains the dominant mode of movability, questions arise about its ability to meet future needs. It’s increasingly clear that a shift in transportation is essential for sustainable mobility. But how can this work?
Modifications to urban infrastructure must be future-oriented to avoid high costs. Predicting the future is inherently uncertain and relies on data and assumptions. How could the future network look? To answer this, user participation is crucial.
Maplab is an online open laboratory focused on exploring a new mobility network. It is a website where users can share their preferred routes in the city of Bremen.
Collective visualizations are created by marking the starting point, route and final destination. The participation is reflected voluntarily through feedback about their experience of using a route. This enables the direct incorporation of needs, requirements, and desires into the development process of a new network for local public transportation.

According to data, the main aim and purpose of transportation in the city of Bremen can be divided into two groups: those whose daily activities, such as school, shopping, and leisure, occur within a similar area and typically use alternative ways of transportation like cycling, public transport or walking; and those whose primary commute is to work, usually by car.
How, where and when? With this data, a more efficient present can be planned. But what about the future? The current data collection represents the current road network. To create a road network oriented towards the population, we must break free from current structures. MapLab aims to create new opportunities for users. What places do they want to reach, which have been difficult to access until now?
